Every handset is tied to the SIM card inserted in to the unit, you can swap the card in and out of each phone to use but that is not recommended at all, risk of damage to the SIM holder should be minimized.

A SIM card can "sit" for a very long time, the only issue you would have is the cost of the plan. If you prepaid then that cost is only valid for 30 days. The cost may change is the underlying issue. 

In reality the SIM could sit for years.
