OneWeb Satellite

Currently the connectivity is accessible in all areas over 50 degrees latitude. Latency is less than 50 milliseconds, and speeds are 100 Mbps or more. 

OneWeb is a global satellite communications company that aims to provide affordable, high-speed internet connectivity to people around the world, particularly in underserved and unserved regions.  The company plans to acheive this by building and operating a constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites that can provide internet connectivity to any location on Earth.  

The OneWeb network will consist of a total of 648 satellites in orbit, which will be interconnected with ground stations to provide global coverage. The satellites will orbit the Earth at an altitude of around 1,200 km, which is lower than traditional communications satellites, enabling faster data transfer and lower latency.  

The OneWeb satellites communicate with each other using lasers and radio frequencies to create a mesh network in space. This means that data can be transmitted from one satellite to another until it reaches a ground station, which is connected to the internet backbone. The ground stations will communicate with the satellites using radio frequencies, allowing data to be transmitted between the satellites and the ground stations.

OneWeb's satellite network will be capable of delivering internet speeds of up to 1Gbps with a latency of 30ms or less, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including video conferencing, streaming, and online gaming. The network will also be able to support IoT (Internet of Things) devices, enabling businesses and organizations to connect and monitor their assets remotely.

According to a September 4, 2019 press release, "OneWeb will deliver 375 Gbps of capacity above 60th parallel north.  With service starting in 2020, there will be enough capacity to give fiber-like connectivity to hundreds of thousands of homes, planes, and boats, connecting millions across the Arctic.


The dense, flexible coverage of OneWeb’s polar-orbiting satellites coupled with its high-speed service and low latency capabilities will provide a superior connectivity experience to the 48% of the Arctic currently without broadband coverage. In fact, OneWeb most recently proved its system’s capabilities through HD video streaming tests last month with its first six satellites that showcased extreme low latencies under 40 milliseconds and high speed services.


A global network, OneWeb’s Arctic service will be deployed significantly earlier and provide 200 times more capacity than planned systems. Substantial services will start towards the end of 2020, with full 24-hour coverage being provided by early 2021, supplying unprecedented blanket coverage to every part of the Arctic Circle."

A OneWeb User Terminal (UT) consists of a satellite antenna, a receiver and a customer network exchange (CNX) unit. The CNX connects the UT to the customer’s network which in turn connects to end-user devices including laptops, smartphones, sensors, and more. OneWeb is working with leading vendors to provide a portfolio of high performance UTs that can be easily self-installed and which will be customized for specific applications within the Aviation, Maritime, Enterprise, Cellular Backhaul, Government and Consumer broadband sectors. Different User Terminals which feature low power, fast Qualcomm chipsets will be made available for ships, aviation, trucks and trains as well as terminals for premises and fixed locations. 

OneWeb User Terminals will provide high speed connectivity with no change in latency during satellite handovers to ensure excellent voice quality, gaming and web experience.  The patent pending terminals can be self-installed.  They are small, affordable, and so efficient they can operate with optionally included solar panels, battery packs, and WiFi / LTE / 3G and 2G radios to provide coverage directly to cell phone, tablets and laptops.  More details on OneWeb User Terminals will be released in the lead up to service launch.
